Making Mock Sedimentary Rocks

It’s that time again to make mock rocks for our 4th grade geology classes. As requested, the recipe is below so you can make your own rocks st home!! Have fun and don’t forget the last, important step–Cleaning Up!!

MAKING MOCK Sedimentary ROCKS!

1-Part One
Dry Ingredients (sediments)
Flour- 50ml
Salt- 25ml
Sand – 50ml
Oyster shells- pinch
Minerals (colored pebbles) – pinch
Alum- 1/8tsp
Sturdy plastic bag (for mixing)

2-Part Two
H2O– 30ml (Use eye dropper if extra H20 is needed.)

STEPS IN SEQUENCE-
A. One at a time, measure out and put sediments in the bag.
B. Gently mix all the dry sediments together.

C. Measure H2O and pour into sediment bag.
D. Mix sediments using pressure and cementing (occurs naturally with our glues)
E. Shape sediments into sedimentary rocks.
D. Put sedimentary rocks in a warm, sunny spot to allow the H2O to evaporate.
E. Have fun!!
